Tne or two [Eskimo women] wore hair-sticks. These appendages hung from each side of the forehead, the hair being drawn down the side of the stick of wood, by no means light in itself, and was wound kept in place by a band of heavy cloth, which was on in the same way as a soldier puts on his puttees.
